Munich – an eulogy
Rarely have I been drawn to the Bavarian capital, as I tend to go to Hamburg rather than to the south.
But I think that this will change now, because after my last short visit Munich has taken my heart by storm!
I spent two days at the time-honored Hotel Bayerischer Hof. Although I have already visited some 5 star houses, this one was special. Everywhere an excellently trained staff, courteous and always with an eye on pampering the guests. The house itself is classic, beautiful and huge, with many possibilities to sit down for dinner or a glass of champagne. The suite was surprisingly modernly furnished (there are probably very different ones) and offered a lot of space to play 😉
Seldom have I slept so well in a hotel bed as I did there!
I was especially impressed by the lounge, which is part of the Blu Spa: On the seventh floor you can sit on the terrace and look over Munich. When the weather is fine, which we luckily had, it is heavenly – in the truest sense of the word. One sits just as nicely one floor below at the pool and has the advantage that one can always swim a few lengths. In the spa you can choose from a range of wellness treatments, of which I can warmly recommend the “Blu Spa Massage” (I haven’t tried the rest – will be made up for *gg*).
The program during the two days was tightly organized, one highlight was definitely the dinner at Shane’s restaurant. There, one does without a menu and offers a surprise menu only. In advance you are asked if there are things you don’t like, how many courses you would like, if you are vegetarian or not and off you go. The greeting from the kitchen: tartar in tea with spicy popcorn. Very…creative. And tasty! First course: turbot gnocchi in breadcrumbs on fennel vegetables. First panic attack, I forgot that I don’t like fennel at all, but I did try it. And it was great! The remaining three courses were also amazing, I can’t quite get them right. The waiters were all young, pretty and they understood their craft very well.
I have to admit, I have rarely eaten so well and while I am writing this, I am really getting hungry.
After the meal, one should in any case have a drink in the attached, cosy little B-bar. After all, I like good cocktails, which sometimes move a bit away from the mainstream and here I am completely satisfied! I like to follow blindly the motto on the website of Bill Fehn, the master of the bar “TRUST YOUR BARTENDER”.
Because you can hardly stand on one leg, I was allowed to discover another gem of the Munich coctail bar scene, the Barroom on the Milchstraße. Tiny bar with three tables and not much space at the bar, unbelievably cosy and cocktails that won’t let you get out of your rapture. Also here I play the usual game of “one drink from the menu, then give the bartender a direction and see what comes”. My standards are high and will not be disappointed!
Two kilos heavier, I took a little shopping tour through Munich with a friend on the last day, where we ended up spending most of the time at Agent Provocateur. Munich can consider itself lucky to have the only store of its own in Germany. I have never tried on AP underwear before, but I have admired it for years (I never buy underwear on the internet at any time unless I have tried on the brand first). Under expert advice I have tried on my dream models and many more and decided on a heavenly set in soft pink. Very hot! I am looking forward to show it off… 😉
Munich has enchanted me, spoiled me from front to back and pampered me – I will be back!
PS: I even managed to drink a whole “Maß” of beer ALONE in the Augustinerbiergarten! Now I am a big girl 😀
PPS: Thanks dear Gugl-Mobil in front of the Lodenfrey, because of you I am addicted to lemon-eggnog and chocolate-coconut cakes!
PPPS: 2022 – Shanes restaurant is closed, what a pity!
